The vast Tengger Desert, the fourth largest desert in China, sits against the north bank of the Yellow River while the towering Xiangyan Mountain borders the south bank of the Yellow River, with the water, desert, and the mountain jointly forming a natural "Tai Chi Diagram". Here is the intersection of Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, and Gansu, the first Yellow River mouth forward to Sichuan, the inevitable part of the Eurasian passage and the ancient Silk Road. The eternal and harmonious coexistence between the Yellow River and the desert, the desert and the oasis, human and nature present a superb scenery represented in the reputation of "Shapotou" at home and abroad. Wang Wei, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, wrote his eternal poetry lines "Dust column rises vertically on the vast desert against a round setting sun in the Yellow River." here.

In 2013, Shapotou went viral as the second stop of the parent-child program Where Are We Going, Dad?, turning it to be the first choice for the family trip in China. Recently, Shapotou Attraction has hosted other hot programs such as Viva La Romance and Running Man.
